Future of Hungary’s regional policy remains uncertain after elections, analyst says

Republika Srpska will seek to continue cooperation with Hungary following the parliamentary elections, but it remains to be seen how the new government will approach the region, said Bojan Šolaja from the Center for International and Security Studies.

Šolaja noted that former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had maintained a strong focus on the region, particularly through cooperation in the fields of energy and security.

“For many years, Orbán was our partner, shaping Hungary’s official policy,” Šolaja said.

He added that it is still unclear whether the new government will support stronger regional economic integration or shift its focus exclusively toward Western countries.

Šolaja emphasized that the future intensity of relations between Hungary and Republika Srpska will depend on the policies of the new authorities.

“Republika Srpska will aim to continue cooperation with Hungary, but that will, of course, depend on the other side as well. It remains to be seen what approach the new Hungarian government will take toward the region. That policy will influence all other bilateral relations,” he explained.

He also pointed out that no major departures from Hungary’s previous policies are expected, as they were primarily aligned with national interests.

“If we look at Peter Magyar’s political track record, he is someone who has largely followed Hungary’s official policy line. What remains to be seen is how he will position Hungary’s interests, particularly in balancing relations between the European Union and the Russian Federation, which has been a central issue in Hungary’s political dynamics with the EU,” Šolaja concluded.
