BiH cannot survive without the principles of the Dayton Agreement, and anyone seeking to depart from Dayton must first ask what the alternative is, German Bundestag MP Alexander Wolf (Alternative for Germany) said during the parliamentary debate marking 30 years since the signing of the peace accord.
Bojan Šolaja of the Center for International and Security Studies told RTRS that it is highly important that the Bundestag discussed the fundamentals of the Dayton Peace Agreement three decades later. He noted that Wolf presented detailed observations, highlighting developments that have taken place since Christian Schmidt arrived in BiH.
According to Šolaja, Wolf also drew attention to global shifts and the risks surrounding the Dayton framework. Commenting on the lifting of US sanctions on officials from Republika Srpska, Šolaja emphasised that Germany should follow suit.
Wolf, he added, expressed support for the policy of Republika Srpska and its commitment to the Dayton Agreement, stressing that the Bundestag is showing interest in BiH in a realistic and informed manner.
Wolf told parliament that without national identity and self-determination, there is no modern democracy, stressing that ethnic peoples play a central role in BiH. Undermining the Dayton Agreement, he warned, only fuels escalation in the region.
“Christians, Serbs and Croats in BiH do not want to become minorities in their own country. They do not want to fall under a Muslim authority that seeks to decide their future. Serbs and Croats consistently demonstrate this through elections and referendums. We must respect that. That is democracy,” Wolf said.
He also noted that the party of Milorad Dodik – SNSD – won the recent presidential election in Republika Srpska, adding that Christian Schmidt must acknowledge that his strategy has failed, as Serbs will not change their political choices under international pressure.
