The National Assembly of Republika Srpska has remained the central pillar of legislative authority through the difficult years of war, the challenges of the post-war period, reforms, and modern political processes — a place where policies are shaped, laws are adopted, and the foundations for development are built, said Prime Minister Savo Minić.
Minić emphasized that today marks, with great pride, 34 years since the establishment of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska — an institution whose work, wisdom, and perseverance laid the foundations of Republika Srpska’s statehood and preserved its democratic spirit.
“On this day, October 24, 1991, the Serb people in BiH established their own Assembly as an expression of political maturity, historical awareness, and determination to safeguard peace, freedom, and collective rights in times of uncertainty,” Minić said while attending the ceremonial academy dedicated to the anniversary.
He recalled that this decision led to the Declaration on the Proclamation of the Republic of the Serb People of BiH adopted on January 9, 1992 — the act that marked the birth of Republika Srpska, with all elements of statehood and a clear commitment to resolving disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law.
Minić noted that the National Assembly is more than just a legislative body — it is a source of statehood and a guardian of sovereignty.
He stressed that today recognition is due to all MPs, employees, and staff of the National Assembly, as well as everyone who over the decades has protected the institutions, the legal system, and the constitutional order of Republika Srpska.
“Our duty is to continue on the same path — with responsibility, mutual respect, and strengthened institutions. Only in that way will Republika Srpska remain strong, stable, and proud — just as our predecessors created it, and as our children deserve,” Minić concluded.
On this day in 1991, the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH laid the foundation for the institution that would become the legislative backbone of Republika Srpska, initiating the process of building the legal and political framework of the entity.
