Peskov: Russia will raise the issue of returning to the Dayton Agreement at the UN Security Council

The UN Security Council session on the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is scheduled for October 31.

Russia will use its presidency of the Security Council to raise the issue of returning to the Dayton Peace Agreement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced.

“We believe the situation, as before, remains very tense—the situation in Republika Srpska is particularly tense. It is necessary to return to the spirit and the letter of the Dayton Agreement, and Russia will use its presidency to ensure this,” Peskov said at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, as reported by Gazeta.ru.

He assessed that Western countries are complicating the implementation of the Dayton Agreement, which he emphasized is crucial for stabilizing Republika Srpska.
“Cooperation with Western countries is extremely difficult. You can see that many in the West actually approve of this departure from Dayton,” Peskov stressed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on September 9 that the complex processes in Bosnia and Herzegovina are the result of Western interference in the country’s internal affairs. He also called for the dismissal of High Representative Christian Schmidt and the closure of his office.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the West of trying to provoke tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Dayton Agreement was signed in Paris on December 14, 1995, by the leaders of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Yugoslavia. It ended the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and established a framework for peace, including a ceasefire, NATO peacekeeping forces, and a special administrative and political structure for BiH.

The UN Security Council session on BiH is scheduled for October 31.
