Stevandić: Failure to invoke vital national interest protection shows Schmidt is obsolete

The President of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, Nenad Stevandić, stated that the Bosniak Caucus in the Council of Peoples choosing not to invoke the vital national interest protection mechanism regarding the laws adopted at the last special parliamentary session indicates that the illegitimate High Representative Christian Schmidt is no longer useful as a political tool.

“The last time they didn’t initiate this mechanism, they called for the intervention of the High Representative. This might now be a sign of progress or at least an indication that Schmidt has become politically obsolete, whether in coordination efforts or even in the capacity he was supposedly assigned under the Dayton Agreement—even if he were legitimate, which he is not,” Stevandić stated.

He emphasized that since the protection mechanism was not initiated, the legal process for the adopted laws will continue.

Bosniak Caucus abstains, awaiting Constitutional Court intervention

The Bosniak Caucus in the Council of Peoples of Republika Srpska has decided not to invoke the vital national interest protection mechanism concerning the laws passed at the February session of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska. Instead, they believe that the laws should go through all legal procedures before being reviewed by the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On February 27, during a special session, the National Assembly of Republika Srpska adopted the following laws:

  • Law on the Non-Implementation of Laws and Prohibition of Activities of Unconstitutional Institutions of BiH
  • Law on the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Republika Srpska
  • Law on Amendments to the Criminal Code of Republika Srpska
  • Law on the Special Register and Public Transparency of Non-Profit Organizations

Stevandić emphasized that the continuation of the legal procedure for these laws demonstrates that Republika Srpska remains committed to its institutional and legislative autonomy.
