Films “Waiting for the Cross” and “Life is a Masquerade” represent Republika Srpska

The International Documentary Film Festival “Dokument 2024” will take place in Vranje from tomorrow until December 5, featuring directors from Republika Srpska, Vitomir Mitrić and Branko Lazić.

Mitrić will present his documentary “Waiting for the Cross,” which he describes as a dream of reality through the life and poetry of Dara Sekulić, exploring themes of life and death, struggles, reconciliation, faith, and doubt.

  • “Through staged scenes of searching and visions for peace and soul’s tranquility, waiting for the cross is illustrated with funeral photographs and church memorials. Archival material features Dara speaking about loneliness, life, belonging, and suffering. The film merges poetry and visuals with a voice of intellectual will to accept and endure personal and collective destinies, portraying her primordial strength,” said Mitrić.

Lazić’s film “Life is a Masquerade” tells the story of Duško Trifunović, a boy with slim chances of surviving childhood, who grew to become a worker-poet. A young machinist secretly writing poems in the corners of an oil refinery, Trifunović quickly became a significant figure in the literary and public life of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 1960s.

The film is about a man who elevated popular music through his poetic contributions, but instead of receiving substantial royalties for timeless hits, was labeled as a “pop poet.” It explores the drama of a man who was once a symbol of Sarajevo, quietly leaving the city in 1992 and reinventing himself in Novi Sad as a “poet of mist”—not a refugee, but mist.

In his project, Lazić raises the question of why a poet, decorated with the most prestigious poetry awards, anthologized, and recognized by serious literary criticism, remains categorized as a pop poet within academic circles.
