The USA has requested that BiH extradite Mevlid Jašarević so that he can stand trial for the attempted murder of US officials.
His lawyer, Alma Tabaković, said she was informed this afternoon that the United States was requesting that Jašarević be remanded in custody, BIRN reported.
“The request is for him to stand trial in the United States for the attempted murder of US officials,” Tabaković said.
An extradition hearing in connection with the US request is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
Jašarević could be released this week, as his 15-year prison sentence for terrorism expires tomorrow. He was convicted after opening fire with an automatic rifle on the US Embassy in Sarajevo on 28 October 2011.
Today, the Court of BiH acquitted Jašarević at first instance of charges that he had threatened staff at the Institute for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions, Detention and Other Measures in Vojkovići and attempted to prevent them from carrying out their official duties.
