“On the occasion of marking the 850th anniversary of the birth of Rastko Nemanjić—Saint Sava, a symposium titled ‘Saint Sava and the Nomocanon—culture, statehood, geopolitics, and civilization’ is being held in Banja Luka. Eminent authors, university professors, researchers, and thinkers will speak about the significance of the Nomocanon from the time of its creation to the present day.”
“Saint Sava’s Nomocanon represents the foundation of Serb statehood and spirituality, as well as proof of state, legal, cultural, political, and civilizational continuity,” participants in the scientific gathering agreed.
“‘Through the centuries, practically from the first decades of the thirteenth century when Sava brought it, up to the present day, the Nomocanon has been embedded in the foundations of Serb identity,’ said Đorđe Bubalo of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade.”
“The Nomocanon is one of the most important documents in Serb history. Its influence lasted for centuries and extended beyond the boundaries of the national context.”
“‘No act created by a Serb has experienced such a historical trajectory. It is an act that today represents the positive law of the Serb Orthodox Church, which, in accordance with the decision of the Holy Assembly of Bishops from 1939, remains in force within the Serb Orthodox Church,’ emphasized Đorđe Đukić of the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade.”
“The theme of statehood was also addressed at the symposium. Saint Sava and Stefan the First-Crowned laid the foundations of the Serb state under complex historical circumstances, similar to those of today, preserving the people and institutions through the centuries, said Dušan Pavlović, Director of the Center for Socio-Political Research of Republika Srpska.”
“‘We are coming to a time when we will either unite all the strengths of the Serb people, culture, and everything else in order to develop and grow, or we face the danger and challenge of becoming even fewer in number and disappearing,’ Pavlović said.”
“Draga Mastilović, Minister for Scientific and Technological Development and Higher Education of Republika Srpska, added that ‘those who today safeguard Serb Kosovo and Metohija are precisely the unextinguished lamps of the Nemanjić dynasty. That is why we must always remember and study that era, because there lie the foundations of our statehood and the foundations of our spirituality and of us as a people.’”
“The promotion of the phototype edition of the Nomocanon—one of the eleven preserved manuscripts, the Tvrdoš–Sava copy—will be held this evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Banski Dvor.”
