Staša Baštić: Gzira as an opportunity for a step forward

Young midfield footballer Staša Baštić will continue his career abroad after signing a contract with Gzira United, a club competing in the Maltese championship.

This will be his first move outside Bosnia and Herzegovina and an opportunity to prove himself with a new club and on the international stage. His strong performances in the first part of the season in the Republika Srpska league did not go unnoticed.

Baštić made 15 appearances, recording one goal and three assists.

“This is my first engagement abroad. At the beginning of the year, an agency that had been following my performances contacted me. Gzira United were looking for a midfielder, and we reached an agreement quickly. At first, it was honestly a bit unusual for me, because this is my first move outside Bosnia and Herzegovina. After receiving the offer, I spoke with my family and we decided that this was the best step for me and my career. This is certainly a big step forward, and I hope this move will be a ‘springboard’ for the future,” Baštić told Glas Srpske.

The young midfielder has previously played for Željezničar Sport Team, Sloga, and Radnik Bijeljina. The main part of the Maltese championship has just begun, and Gzira opened the season in impressive fashion with a convincing win in the first round. The club also became known in the region after eliminating Hajduk Split. In addition, they knocked out Radnički Kragujevac and advanced through three rounds of the Conference League.

“Gzira is a very respected club in this country. They have a great history and regularly compete in European competitions. My teammates accepted me immediately and have been very supportive, so there were no problems with adaptation. I am happy to be here — the conditions are very good, as is the team — and I hope to give my best and help the club achieve its goals,” the midfielder added.

The main part of the championship has only just started, giving him plenty of time to establish himself with the coaching staff.

An unusual system

The Maltese Premier League is played under an unusual system.

“First, 12 clubs play 11 rounds, after which they are divided into a championship group and a relegation group. After that, the competition again involves all 12 clubs. There are two phases of play-offs and play-ins. We are now at the start of the main phase, so the biggest challenges are ahead of us,” Staša explained.
