Lifting of sanctions marks a shift in U.S. policy toward the region

The decision by the United States to lift sanctions against officials, individuals, and legal entities from Republika Srpska represents a policy shift by the administration of Donald Trump toward this region, it was stated in the RTRS program Drugi ugao (The Other Angle).

According to the show’s guests, this also demonstrates that the leadership of Republika Srpska has recognized the changing balance of power on the global stage.

International relations expert Lucijano Kaluža said that the leadership of Republika Srpska was perhaps the only one to notice the shifts coming from the United States and to realize early on that the new president would insist on precisely such a course of American policy.

“Support from Republika Srpska partly contributed to the change in the U.S. approach toward Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Kaluža emphasized.

Neven Đenadija from the Center for Socio-Political Research of Republika Srpska stated that this may be the first time since the Dayton Peace Agreement that something has been done toward Republika Srpska that could be described as fair, and that Serbs are now being treated as relevant interlocutors by the new administration.

Political scientist Vojislav Savić noted that the process of changing the entrenched narrative of “permanent blame” is, unfortunately, still incomplete.

“We can see that from the behavior of other Western countries, but this is a good step toward a different Bosnia and Herzegovina — one where we will finally be able to tell our side of the story,” Savić said.
