President Milorad Dodik stated that the establishment of the Assembly of the Serb People in Bosnia and Herzegovina 34 years ago was a magnificent event in the political and national history of the Serb people and a clear sign that Serbs want to determine their own destiny.
“The Serb people were determined and united at that time. I am proud of the fact that I was among those who took part in the formation of the Assembly of the Serb People,” Dodik said.
He noted that the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH adopted several important decisions, including the formation of Republika Srpska on January 9, 1992.
“Later, it adopted the Constitution on February 28, and on May 12 the Law on the Formation of the Army of Republika Srpska, which took the lead in defending our people,” Dodik added.
According to Dodik, those who led political processes at that time looked ahead strategically and knew well the political character of Sarajevo and what he described as the Muslim ambition to govern the entire country.
“That national movement, which united the entire people, was then led by the SDS as a popular movement — something it does not resemble today. Nevertheless, recognition must be given to all: the late Momčilo Krajišnik, Radovan Karadžić as president, Biljana Plavšić, Nikola Koljević, and all members of parliament, both from the government and the opposition, who stood together on the key national issues,” he told SRNA.
He said that these events will remain a permanent part of the memory of the Serb people and Serb political thought, adding that younger generations should learn from that example of unity in crucial moments.
The National Assembly of Republika Srpska was established on October 24, 1991, as the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH. The decision was made by MPs elected in the autumn 1990 elections.
On the same day, during the inaugural session of the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH, several acts were adopted — most notably, the Decision for the Serb People to Remain in the Common State of Yugoslavia and the Decision on Holding a Plebiscite of the Serb People in BiH.
On January 9, 1992, members of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska adopted the Declaration on the Proclamation of the Republic of the Serb People of BiH — a date now celebrated in Republika Srpska as Republic Day.
On February 28, 1992, the National Assembly adopted the Constitution of Republika Srpska and the constitutional law for its implementation, formally establishing the state-legal subjectivity of the Serb people.
