The situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council on October 31, thanks to the initiative of the Russian Federation. Political analysts emphasize that it is crucial for the issue of Bosnia and Herzegovina — and particularly the status of Republika Srpska — to be presented before the highest international body.

The importance of highlighting the violations of the Dayton Peace Agreement within UN institutions is significant, given that Republika Srpska is currently facing the greatest pressure since the post-Dayton period, said Nina Sajić of the Faculty of Political Science in Banja Luka, speaking on RTRS’s program Drugi ugao (Another Angle).

“In our case, given that the positions of Republika Srpska will be presented, this is extremely important. This is not the first time — for several years now, especially regarding the existence of the Office of the High Representative (OHR) and the presence of Christian Schmidt, we have had unconditional support from two permanent members of the UN Security Council — China and Russia,” Sajić said.

Political analyst Miloš Šolaja noted that bringing the issue to the Security Council agenda is, in itself, a major achievement.

“Getting on the agenda is a significant step. Until now, Republika Srpska, the Government, and the President have been submitting reports and analyses on the situation, but they only had the form of presidential statements, meaning they were recognized on a voluntary basis — some would acknowledge them, others would not. However, this time there will be an actual debate,” Šolaja explained.

Historian Aleksandar Raković cautioned that expectations from the UN Security Council session should remain realistic, as Republika Srpska still faces the same adversaries — the United States and the United Kingdom.

“What matters is that the topic is present and that as many countries and their representatives as possible hear about the ongoing injustices in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The pressure is mostly — or almost entirely — directed against Republika Srpska. In the future, when a new international order emerges, there will be more room for fair and just solutions to the issues concerning Republika Srpska,” Raković concluded.
