Cooperation signed between MSURS and MNMU: Strengthening cultural ties between Belgrade and Banja Luka

A cooperation protocol was signed today in Belgrade between the Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art (MNMU) and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Republika Srpska (MSURS).

The agreement was signed by Dr. Ivana Bašičević Antić, Director of MNMU, and Dr. Sarita Vujković, Director of MSURS, at the premises of the Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art.

The protocol envisions the hosting of two significant MNMU exhibitions in Banja Luka in 2026 – “Conscious Abandonment of Reality: Ilija Bosilj and Sava Sekulić” and “Lazar Vujaklija: Protest Toward Oneself.”

The exhibitions will open simultaneously at MSURS, from the beginning of June until early September 2026, giving the Banja Luka audience the opportunity to become acquainted with the complete oeuvre of these exceptional artists.

Dr. Ivana Bašičević Antić emphasized that this is a project long and thoroughly planned, one that will be significant for the cultural environment of the region.

“These artists represent boundary phenomena that belong both to contemporary art and to the domain of art brut, and their works deserve to be presented in institutions such as MSURS, which demonstrates relevance and openness to new artistic practices,” noted Bašičević Antić.

On the other hand, Dr. Sarita Vujković added that the Museum of Contemporary Art of Republika Srpska strives to strengthen regional cooperation and host projects that bring innovative programs and new readings of art history.

“It is a great honor that we have been chosen to host exhibitions that will allow the Banja Luka audience to see the works of authors who until now have only been partially presented, but will now be displayed in a new museological context,” said Vujković.

The exhibition “Conscious Abandonment of Reality: Ilija Bosilj and Sava Sekulić” has already had great success in Italy and Novi Sad, attracting thousands of visitors, while the retrospective “Lazar Vujaklija: Protest Toward Oneself” will, for the first time, bring together works of this important artist created in all phases of his career.
