Councilors from the Bosniak community boycotted today’s commemorative session of the Srebrenica Municipal Assembly, during which tribute was paid to all victims from Srebrenica—both Serbs and Bosniaks killed during the past war.
A moment of silence was held in Srebrenica to honor all victims, both Bosniak and Serb.
Nemanja Zekić, son of the murdered former member of parliament Goran Zekić and currently a councilor in the Srebrenica Municipal Assembly, stated that no one has the right to separate the victims.
“The tears of a Serb mother in Srebrenica hurt just as much as those of a Muslim mother in Srebrenica. There is no difference, and no one has exclusivity,” said councilor Nemanja Zekić.
The boycott of the session by Bosniak politicians and pro-Bosnian organizations, he said, reflects an unwillingness to face the truth—that both Serbs and Bosniaks suffered in and around Srebrenica.
“We aimed to create an inclusive policy for all, but it seems there was no courage,” emphasized the head of the Srebrenica municipality, Miloš Vučić.
Bosniaks in Srebrenica have extended a hand for agreement, reconciliation, and coexistence. Whether that hand will be accepted is up to them, stated Radomir Pavlović, deputy speaker of the assembly.
“Srebrenica should follow its own path, so that together we can plan projects and move forward with economic development,” Pavlović added.
Tomorrow, the 30th anniversary of the suffering of Bosniaks will be marked in Potočari, and the following day, a memorial service will be held in Zalazje for the Serbs killed on Petrovdan in Srebrenica in 1992.
