The premiere of the play “Kuća” (The House), written by Nebojša Ilić and directed by Nikola Pejaković, will take place on April 28 at 8:30 PM on the Petar Kočić Small Stage of the National Theatre of Republika Srpska.
Ilić’s award-winning play — which received the Best Dramatic Text award at the International Theatre Meetings in Brčko District — explores themes of identity, belonging, and the search for home, through characters from three generations, placed in different spaces and times.
— Where is our true home? The theme of “wandering” has always fascinated me. Some of my friends who left Serbia will always remain strangers… I often feel like a stranger in the city I was born in, where I no longer recognize streets or entire neighborhoods. That sense of “wandering” stays with me even when I’m alone with myself. But wandering doesn’t have to be a negative feeling — it’s also a search, an adventure, excitement. I wanted to translate all of that into a humorous story about three characters, across three generations, three spaces, and three eras. They are all searching for “The House.” — says Ilić.
The play presents an intimate and layered family story set in a modern context. Through a micro-drama involving a daughter, a father, and a grandfather, Ilić raises universal questions about belonging, heritage, generational divides, and the silence that threatens to replace dialogue.
The action takes place within the walls of a single house, which serves both as a symbol and a real space of inheritance, conflict, and attempts at understanding. “Kuća” is not just a living space — it’s a burden of the past, a place of unspoken words, fears, and hard-to-express love.
