Book “Russian Volunteers” promoted in Višegrad

On the occasion of the Day of Russian Volunteers, the book “Russian Volunteers” by author Aleksandr Kravchenko was promoted in Višegrad. The book contains 22 short stories depicting the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 1990s, and is dedicated to those who came from distant Russia to defend the Serb people in this region.

The author found inspiration in his wartime memories—of battles, his comrades-in-arms, and the landscapes where he fought.

“I wanted to document what happened in this area during the war and leave it for future generations, so our children would know what took place here,” said Kravchenko.

Kravchenko, a writer and war veteran, describes his fellow fighters as knights of Slavic brotherhood who, by sacrificing their own lives, stood in defense of the Serb people.

As part of the Day of Russian Volunteers, the documentary film “Island of Faith” was also screened. The film tells the story of a monastery located on the front lines and explores the theme of spiritual heroism expressed through human strength, faith, and mutual support.

“The film shows how civilians—non-combatants—performed an act of heroism by preserving their monastery and saving people from a nearby village,” said filmmaker Olga Kiry.

The Day of Russian Volunteers is being officially marked in Višegrad today. It has been included in the calendar of significant historical dates of Republika Srpska, in memory of Russian volunteers who lost their lives during the past Defensive-Patriotic War.
