A mural featuring Avdagina Fata, a character from Ivo Andrić’s novel “The Bridge on the Drina,” has been painted on a residential building in Višegrad. This mural is part of a series inspired by this literary masterpiece.
The mural’s creator, Andrej Žikić Artez, a street artist from Belgrade, stated that he has been involved in this form of art for around twenty years and that creating this mural was a significant challenge for him.
- “I would be delighted if I could leave a series of works in this town that would allow people to learn more about Višegrad, its history, and provide a new addition to its tourist offerings,” emphasized Žikić.
One of the idea’s originators, Stefan Lakić, explained that the mural on Vojvoda Stepa Street is designed as part of a series of portraits depicting characters from Andrić’s novel.
- “Through this, we aim to shift the focus and awareness of our people towards recognizing that the foundations of culture and honor are rooted here in this region, not beyond its borders,” noted Lakić.
He further elaborated that Avdagina Fata, a character from Andrić’s novel, can be seen as a symbol of personal resolve.
- “On the day of her wedding, which was arranged against her will, Fata decided to jump from the bridge and end her life. In doing so, she testifies that she is not merely a passive object or a pawn on a chessboard controlled by others but goes down in history as a self-aware being who defies authority,” Lakić emphasized.
The mural project was initiated by the association Eko centar, with the support of Hidroelektrane na Drini and the Municipality of Višegrad.
