The Janj primeval forest, located in the municipality of Šipovo, has become the first natural site from Republika Srpska to be inscribed on UNESCO’s World Natural Heritage list.
This ancient beech forest, designated as a world natural heritage site in 2021, has been recognized for its global ecological significance and unique natural beauty.
Following this recognition, the Government of Republika Srpska approved the signing of a cooperation document with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations to support efforts in promoting, protecting, and preserving this exceptional reserve.
The framework for collaboration, titled the “Joint Declaration of Intent to Cooperate in the Field of Protection and Management of the Common World Heritage of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe,” unites 18 European countries in a shared commitment to preserving these ancient forests. This multinational initiative is led by Belgium through the Flanders Nature and Forest Agency.
The signatory countries have expressed their intent to support one another in preserving these natural assets through an integrated management system, education, awareness-raising, local community engagement, and sustainable development to ensure the long-term protection of these areas. This partnership also highlights the role of these ancient beech forests in combating and adapting to climate change.
In Republika Srpska, the Šipovo Forest Management Company “Gorica” is responsible for the protection of the Janj primeval forest, ensuring its conservation and responsible management.
As part of UNESCO’s serial natural heritage property “Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe,” the Janj forest is a segment of the largest serial natural heritage site in the world, encompassing 94 locations across 18 countries. These natural wonders invite visitors from around the globe to experience the timeless beauty of Europe’s beech forests and their ecological significance.
