Župljanin: Terrorism is a serious threat

It is evident that there is no will in Bosnia and Herzegovina to prevent the activities of terrorist groups and individuals, stated Slobodan Župljanin, dean of the Faculty of Security in Banja Luka.

“A particular problem is that in more than two-thirds of terrorist attacks, the perpetrators are minors or young people. This indicates a level of indoctrination among the youth that is unacceptable for any society, including BiH,” warned Župljanin.

Župljanin noted that following the terrorist act in Bosanska Krupa, in which a minor killed one police officer and injured another, there is an urgent need for a specific strategy to combat radical Islam in BiH, but there is a lack of will to pursue this.

He believes it is high time for all structures in BiH to become aware of and confront the fact that terrorist activities exist in BiH, which is detrimental to every citizen.

“This cannot be attributed to any single ethnic group in BiH but solely to certain groups and individuals who must be brought under control. Nowhere in the world is it permitted to prepare and train individuals for carrying out terrorist acts, and this must be prevented to ensure the safety of citizens,” Župljanin stated.

He emphasized that recent terrorist activities in BiH are something that experts have been warning about for a long time.

Župljanin pointed out that the terrorist attack in Bosanska Krupa practically shows that young people are systematically indoctrinated and prepared to commit terrorist acts.

“Existing Wahhabi communities and parallel religious groups are conducting illegal activities, and as a result, the minor who committed the act of terrorism was introduced to this ideology by his uncle,” Župljanin said.

Župljanin remarked that this “virus” has been released into the air and can certainly infect a large number of people.

He reminded that the objectives which a terrorist act seeks to achieve can bring significant harm to communities, nations, countries, and individuals in which they occur.

“In the case of Bosanska Krupa, several individuals were arrested, but unfortunately, they were practically released and are defending themselves from house arrest, which is unacceptable,” Župljanin concluded.

The minor, not yet 15 years old, entered the duty service of the Bosanska Krupa Police Station on the evening of Thursday, October 24, and stabbed two police officers in the chest, one of whom succumbed to his injuries, while the other was treated at the cantonal hospital.

The attack on the Police Station in Bosanska Krupa has been characterized as a terrorist act, and the investigation is now being led by the BiH Prosecutor’s Office.
