European Commission report

The latest report from the European Commission provides a balanced overview of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s progress on its path to the EU, confirming that where there is political will, there is progress, emphasized Head of Delegation Luigi Soreca for RTRS.

“I would highlight that the adopted report serves as a roadmap for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s further EU journey, covering the period from June of last year until September 2024. This report spans over a year, during which a series of developments have been objectively assessed,” Soreca noted.

He added that the report presents two dynamics: the first is exceptionally positive for all of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with progress in the area of migration.

“We also see a second dynamic where, concerning Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path to the EU, there have been no significant results,” Soreca stated.

Soreca highlighted that the report provides a balanced overview and confirms that when there is political will, progress follows.

“The question now is how to reignite that will. My message to all political leaders, following the local elections, is to reactivate efforts. We now have an opportunity. A key and positive step includes migration management, the adoption of the Conflict of Interest Law, and so forth,” Soreca added.

As a reminder, the European Council made an important decision in March to open negotiations, Soreca said.

“These are all very important steps. To initiate negotiations, a negotiating structure must be in place. The EU has its standards and values that must be met, and we have the opportunity to fulfill them,” he noted.

It is also worth mentioning that this is the final report of the European Commission in its current composition. The encouraging news from Brussels is that by the end of the mandate of the next Commission, countries that have started negotiations could become full-fledged members of the European Union.
