Sanija Ahmeti, a councilor for Switzerland’s Liberal Green Party, who is originally from BiH, was seen practicing shooting with a pistol, using an image of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus as the target.
After posting a photo of her target on social media, lawyer Ognjen Tadić responded.
“Political heirs of the Young Muslims, the Islamic Declaration of A. Izetbegović, and political Sarajevo,” Tadić wrote on the social network X.
Local media reported that the image Sanija was shooting at is a reproduction of a work by a medieval Italian artist, taken from an illustrated catalog. Following intense backlash, Ahmeti removed the post and apologized, Srna reported.
She told the newspaper Blick that she used the image from the catalog because it was “the right size and visible enough to serve as a target.”
Ahmeti explained that she hadn’t paid attention to the content of the image and admitted that her actions were wrong, calling her behavior absolutely foolish.
Several conservative politicians condemned Ahmeti’s actions and called for her resignation, with some accusing her of inciting hatred toward Christians and threatening legal action.
Sanija Ahmeti’s family came to Switzerland as refugees from BiH in the 1990s, reports Russia Today.
