Less than twenty days remain until the decision of the European Council on whether the EU will start membership negotiations with BiH. The possible start of negotiations was also discussed in the RTRS program “Drugi ugao” (The Other Angle).
Professor Miloš Šolaja believes that BiH will receive a candidacy promise, but doubts that negotiations will begin. The Ambassador of BiH to Austria, Siniša Bencun, who has witnessed the optimism of Austrian officials regarding BiH’s European path, shares the same opinion.
Member of the SNSD in the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, Srđan Mazalica, believes that BiH is close to obtaining candidacy.
“It has become more of a political game rather than a real need to reach high standards, the conditions required for EU membership, and not in a way that the EU sets them but to the extent necessary for us,” says Šolaja.
What can certainly be heard, adds Bencun, is that the steps made in terms of adopting the Law, Frontex, and the likely chances of adopting at least two laws are sufficient for March 21 to be successful – to get the opening of negotiations with the EU.
Bencun emphasizes that no one mentions a date.
“It cannot harm us; we can benefit from it, but if there are additional requirements before BiH, it should not be considered a tragedy if we do not start negotiations,” Mazalica believes.
