Famos Istočna Ilidža striker Luka Asentić, whose 63rd-minute goal against Leotar secured his team’s place in the round of 16 of the BiH Cup, has emphasized that the victory was the result of a collective effort rather than an individual achievement.
Speaking to Glas Srpske, Asentić expressed satisfaction with scoring the decisive goal but stressed that the entire team deserved recognition for the victory.
Although 13 clubs affiliated with the Football Association of Republika Srpska competed in the BiH Cup round of 32, only four advanced to the next stage.
Alongside Premier League clubs Borac, Radnik and Sloga, Famos emerged as the only First League side from Republika Srpska to reach the last 16, securing an important achievement for the club.
“I am happy that my goal decided the winner, but I am even happier that the team once again demonstrated its strength and character on home ground,” Asentić said.
Famos overcome Leotar despite late penalty scare
Famos were the better side for much of the encounter, but Leotar had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 66th minute.
Elvedin Herić stepped up to take a penalty but failed to convert, sending his effort against the post.
Asentić acknowledged that his team had been fortunate at that moment but argued that their overall performance justified the victory.
“We had a lot of luck in that situation, but perhaps we deserved it because we matched Leotar in every aspect of the game,” he explained.
“Leotar are not at the top of the First League table after 13 rounds by accident. Overall, this is a major achievement for Famos, reaching the last 16 of the competition. Perhaps we can go even further. Who knows?” Asentić added.
Famos prepare for challenging away match against Kozara
There will be little time for celebration, as Famos return to league action on Saturday.
The team will travel to Gradiška to face Kozara at the Velimir Sombolac Stadium, with the 14th-round First League match scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Asentić expects a difficult encounter against opponents who have demonstrated their quality throughout the season, particularly on home ground.
“Our next opponents have shown that they possess a very good team and are capable of producing excellent performances, especially at home,” the 27-year-old striker said.
“However, we know our objectives and do not concern ourselves too much with the name or strength of our opponents. We want to continue this positive run, and I believe we can return home unbeaten,” he emphasized.
Famos aiming for a place in the championship group
After 13 rounds, Famos occupy ninth place in the First League of Republika Srpska with 17 points.
They are only four points behind third-placed Drina and two points behind sixth-placed Majevica, keeping them firmly in contention for a place among the league’s leading teams.
Under the competition format, the top six teams after 26 rounds will advance to the championship group.
Asentić believes Famos have a realistic opportunity to achieve that objective if they maintain their current level of performance.
“As everyone knows, the six best teams after 26 rounds will continue competing in the championship group,” he explained.
“At the moment, the gap is minimal, and I believe that if we continue playing like this, we can join that select group. It would be wonderful to qualify for the championship group,” Asentić concluded.
