Chestnut Festival in Kostajnica: A celebration of tradition, hospitality and community spirit

At a time when almost everything has become commercialized and driven by profit, Kostajnica’s traditional Chestnut Festival, known locally as Kestenijada, continues to preserve something increasingly rare: authentic hospitality, community spirit and a celebration where visitors are welcomed without expecting anything in return.

This tourism, economic and cultural event stands out as one of the few festivals in the wider region that has maintained its genuine, non-profit character.

Every year, the people of Kostajnica go to great lengths to ensure that no visitor leaves hungry or thirsty. And perhaps the most remarkable part is that the food, drinks and hospitality are offered completely free of charge.

Homemade specialties and autumn traditions

Preparations for Kestenijada begin well before the festival itself.

Local women spend days decorating their stands with traditional autumn motifs and preparing a wide variety of homemade cakes, pastries and other delicacies.

Meanwhile, the traditional stew-cooking competition, known as Kotlić Kestenijade, brings together teams in a festive atmosphere filled with the aromas of homemade food.

The gathering typically begins with a glass of rakija, accompanied by traditional sausages, cured ham and assorted local appetizers.

A festival where strangers become friends

The people of Kostajnica are widely known for their openness and warm hospitality.

At Kestenijada, there are no strangers. Visitors can easily join any stand, share food and conversation, and form new friendships over traditional specialties.

The popularity of the festival is reflected in its annual cooking competition, which attracts between 50 and 65 teams from Kostajnica and surrounding communities.

Beyond the food and festivities, Kestenijada offers something increasingly valuable: a genuine sense of belonging and connection between people.

Preserving the heart and soul of Kostajnica

Much of the festival’s continued success is credited to the Tourist Organization of the Municipality of Kostajnica, whose dedication and efforts have helped the event grow year after year.

Despite its increasing popularity, Kestenijada has remained faithful to the values that make it special.

More than a celebration of chestnuts and autumn traditions, the festival represents the generosity, warmth and community spirit of Kostajnica.

It is a reminder that the most memorable experiences are not necessarily those that cost the most, but those shared with open hearts and genuine hospitality.
