On the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the victory over fascism, a military parade is being held today in Moscow. Around 27 million Russians and citizens of the Soviet Union — roughly one third of all those who perished in World War II — lost their lives in the fight against fascism.
Speaking about the culture of remembrance, the historical importance of this day, and the legacy of the anti-fascist struggle, Nikola Ožegović, professor at the Department of History at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Banja Luka, emphasized that no other holiday in Russia is commemorated in such a way.
“You can truly feel that this is a nation that lost a vast number of civilians. It is a country where one often hears a haunting message — if a minute of silence were held for every victim, the entire country would remain silent for 50 years,” Ožegović said.
