On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the beginning of the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, the Minister of Justice of Republika Srpska and president of the Socialist Party of Srpska, Goran Selak, stated that the Serb people will never forget the victims and suffering of 1999, nor the heroism of those who defended their country.
“NATO aggression represents a gross violation of international law and one of the most serious precedents in modern history, as the attack on a sovereign state was carried out without the approval of the United Nations Security Council,” Selak emphasized.
He recalled that during the 78 days of bombing, a large number of civilians were killed, including children, as well as members of the army and police, while critical civilian infrastructure, economic facilities, and key institutions were destroyed.
“A particularly grave injustice toward our people is the fact that prohibited means were used during the aggression, including cluster munitions and depleted uranium projectiles, the consequences of which for public health and the environment are still felt today,” Selak stated.
According to him, the obligation of today’s generations is to preserve the memory of the victims and to persistently insist on truth and justice.
“The Serb people do not seek revenge, but respect for truth and for the victims. We are obliged to nurture a culture of remembrance and to pass on to future generations the truth about the suffering, as well as the resistance and courage our people showed in those difficult times,” Selak said.
He concluded that Republika Srpska remains committed to preserving peace, stability, and respect for international law, but will never accept forgetting or minimizing the suffering of the Serb people.
