Republika Srpska is independently building its international position based on mutual respect among participants in all discussions, as reflected in the current visit to the United States by Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željka Cvijanović, as well as the arrival of retired U.S. General Michael Flynn in Banja Luka, said international relations expert Luciano Kaluža.
“This visit, as well as previous visits by delegations from Republika Srpska to the United States, resulted in agreements on strategic geopolitical and energy projects. This shows that Republika Srpska is acting proactively for the first time by following global developments and understanding geopolitical relations,” Kaluža stated.
He emphasized that Republika Srpska places its own interests first, while not acting to the detriment of other peoples.
“Republika Srpska is not a passive observer, but an active participant in shaping relations in the way it is able to. In that context, the visit of Željka Cvijanović to the United States, as well as the visit of General Flynn to Republika Srpska, should be viewed,” Kaluža noted.
Speaking about Flynn, he said that the retired general is one of the most influential figures within the American military and intelligence structures, recalling that he also served as national security advisor to a U.S. president.
“Flynn came to Banja Luka to send a message to Republika Srpska, but also to the region. However, his primary message was directed to Republika Srpska, through a presentation of how a nation can establish its independence,” Kaluža said.
He pointed to Flynn’s remarks in which the American general addressed how to defend one’s status within a specific political environment.
“He clearly stated and vividly demonstrated the direction Republika Srpska should take in the coming period. He also sent a message to Bosnia and Herzegovina that it cannot function in this way while certain political representatives from the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina undermine the Dayton Peace Agreement,” Kaluža emphasized.
He added that Republika Srpska had strongly fought to preserve the Dayton Agreement, while the Federation had different intentions.
“The United States sends messages through formal and informal channels. An intensive period lies ahead, and Republika Srpska is ready to face it,” Kaluža concluded.
