“Children’s Injuries” to be performed at the Cultural Center “Semberija”

The play “Children’s Injuries”, directed by Ivan Vuković, will be performed on October 29 at 8:00 p.m. at the Cultural Center “Semberija” in Bijeljina.

This dark comedy and melodrama, written by Joseph Rajiv in 2011, explores the complexity of human connection and emotional wounds. Rajiv, one of the most original young American playwrights, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2010 for “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo” and the winner of the Obie Award in 2018 for “Describe the Night.”

“Children’s Injuries” is not a typical love story. From the opening scene set in a school infirmary — where Kaylyn, a girl suffering from severe stomach pain and an ominous sense of despair, meets Doug, a boy who has just crashed his bicycle off the school roof — it becomes clear that these are not ordinary children.

The play follows them from age eight to thirty-eight, tracing their recurring encounters in various places of healing, each time marked by new scars — both physical and emotional.

“How can you love someone if you don’t know how to love yourself?”

With a blend of humor and sadness — because masks often hide pain — the story unfolds as a moving reflection on two people who struggle to fit into the world.

The leading roles are performed by Sloboda Mićalović and Vuk Kostić.
