David Engels in Banja Luka: Europe is in a serious crisis

Today, October 16, 2025, at the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republika Srpska, a promotion was held for David Engels’ book “Defending Europe as a Civilization”, published in Serb for the Republika Srpska by the Center for Socio-Political Research of the Republika Srpska. The director of the Center stated that this is a unique opportunity to hear how scholars from Europe itself — those who do not fit into contemporary research frameworks and stand in opposition to them — think about the survival of Europe.

The author himself spoke about the motives behind writing the book, his own research experience, as well as the potential directions in which Europe is moving.

The discussion touched upon the central concept advocated by David Engels — Hesperialism — the reception of the book, movements such as the ecological, liberal, and woke movements, as well as the place of the Republika Srpska within the constellation of relations in which Europe currently finds itself.

Engels believes that the center of real power will be outside the European continent, and he sees the only solution in what he calls European patriotism. The promotion of Engels’ book was organized by the Center for Socio-Political Research of the Republika Srpska.

“If we do not turn inward in the coming period, I believe there will be major changes and turbulence in European society. Many nation-states will begin to compete with one another, and there will be a danger of internal Islamization. Europe will come under pressure from great powers such as China, the United States, and Russia. In 20 to 25 years, we could find ourselves in a profound identity crisis,” said David Engels, author of ‘Defending Europe as a Civilization’.

“From this point of view, it is very important for us to hear how people who are even sympathetic to us think — how they see the future of Europe — so that both decision-makers and members of the academic community, as well as others who reflect and act in society, can better understand the reality around us and, accordingly, make decisions that are more beneficial for us,” said Dušan Pavlović, Director of the Center for Socio-Political Research of the Republika Srpska.
