Banja Luka continues to proudly preserve and enhance its rich cultural heritage. After the fortress walls of Kastel were illuminated last year, restoration works are now underway on two of its historic towers — landmarks that have protected the city’s spirit for centuries.
According to Milada Šukalo, project manager for the City of Banja Luka, the restoration of Kastel — one of the city’s most recognizable tourist and historical landmarks — holds great significance for both residents and visitors.
“Revitalizing the Kastel Fortress remains high on the city administration’s list of priorities. After successfully completing the wall illumination project, this year we are moving forward with the restoration of two towers, giving new life to this historical gem,” Šukalo said.
A key value of the project lies in combining tradition with a modern tourism experience. The first tower will house a contemporary tourist information center, while the second tower will feature a souvenir shop and café — spaces where Banja Luka’s history and hospitality will meet every day.
“Restoring the Kastel towers is not just about preserving history — it’s an investment in the future. These towers are witnesses of time and symbols of cultural heritage that connect us, and by restoring them we open the doors to everyone who wishes to experience the spirit of our city,” Šukalo added.
The adaptation of Towers 1 and 2 is being carried out under the GIFTSnet project, within the Interreg IPA HR-BA-ME 2021–2027 program, with a clear goal — to make Kastel once again the beating heart of Banja Luka’s cultural and tourist life.
