Serbia’s Foreign Ministry: Sarajevo’s moves divert attention from real challenges facing BiH

Serbia Sarajevo BiH relations became the focus of criticism after new tensions emerged at the UN.

The latest actions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Council of Ministers do not contribute to regional stability but instead create unnecessary tensions and divert attention from the real challenges facing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today.

The statement pointed out that the comments made by BiH’s UN ambassador Zlatko Lagumdžija, who spoke on behalf of the ministry about the meetings of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, represent direct interference in Serbia’s sovereign foreign policy and a violation of basic diplomatic principles.

Serbia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the Serbia Sarajevo BiH dispute should not be fueled with provocative actions but resolved through constructive dialogue. It called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Council of Ministers to focus on a cooperative approach and addressing internal challenges, rather than steps that undermine BiH’s credibility and sow division in the region.

The Serbian ministry expressed its “disagreement and disappointment” regarding yesterday’s statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Council of Ministers, which criticized what it described as Serbia’s interference in BiH’s internal affairs.

“We condemn the contradictory stance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Council of Ministers, which, after President Vučić’s response, resorted to accusations of Serbia’s ‘interference’ in BiH’s internal matters,” Serbia’s Foreign Ministry stated.

The statement further noted that such an approach is not only inconsistent but also an attempt to underestimate the public, thereby undermining trust and good neighborly relations.

It added that Serbia remains committed to strengthening regional cooperation and dialogue but expects mutual respect for sovereignty and restraint from provocative comments.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Council of Ministers had earlier “strongly condemned” Serbia’s statement, which commented on the work of BiH’s Permanent Mission to the UN and BiH ambassador Zlatko Lagumdžija.
