Kaluža: Cvijanović acted proactively, Serb officials credited for talks

The negotiations that led to the reduction of customs tariffs between BiH and the United States are the result of proactive efforts by Serb officials, said international relations expert Luciano Kaluža.

“Representatives from Republika Srpska—particularly Željka Cvijanović, the Serb member of the BiH Presidency—acted proactively and didn’t wait around for solutions,” Kaluža emphasized.

He believes the customs issue is far from over, as tariff rates change regularly, noting that these talks influence political processes even more than economic ones.

“Cvijanović recognized this early on. Negotiating tariffs is a reflection of political relations between Republika Srpska, through BiH, and the U.S.,” he added.

Kaluža also criticized officials from the Federation of BiH, stating they lag behind and fail to understand changing geopolitical dynamics.

“They’re behind in realizing the shift in U.S. strategic direction. Cvijanović has demonstrated the ability to recognize active processes. This kind of negotiation is the best path forward for Republika Srpska,” Kaluža concluded.
