The path to Europe in neutral

Do we lack the ability to interpret European signals, or are Brussels’ signposts deliberately unclear? For nearly two decades, Bosnia and Herzegovina has been trying to move closer to the European Union, but the gate remains firmly closed. Despite repeated promises of progress, each promise seems to bring new obstacles.

Brussels’ Hot-and-cold game

The European Union consistently outlines the conditions Bosnia and Herzegovina must fulfill to move closer to membership. However, even when domestic leaders find a compromise, foreign emissaries often find ways to disrupt those agreements. It appears Brussels is in a constant dilemma—does it genuinely want Bosnia and Herzegovina to join, or is this merely a game of delay?

Another step forward?

This week saw yet another European Union–Western Balkans summit. Officials talk about progress and small steps. But after nearly two decades, many wonder—where are the tangible results? Is there still Euro-optimism among citizens, or has it been exhausted?

Is It Us, or Geopolitics?

It’s clear that the responsibility doesn’t rest solely with domestic leaders. Geopolitics plays a crucial role. Europe itself is burdened with internal issues, while global powers like Russia and China present additional challenges. Bosnia and Herzegovina, like the rest of the region, remains caught between competing interests.

Conclusion
Will the path to the European Union become clearer, or will Bosnia and Herzegovina continue wandering through Brussels’ foggy corridors? The answer depends not only on domestic efforts but also on Europe’s sincerity in opening its doors.
