Soreca: Balkan countries’ accession is a strategic priority for the EU

The Head of the EU Delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Luigi Soreca, stated that the accession of Balkan countries is a strategic priority for the European Union. However, he emphasized that it is up to the authorities in BiH to fulfill the conditions as quickly as possible for the start of negotiations and eventually become a member of the Union.

Soreca highlighted that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, strongly supports EU enlargement, making it one of her three key priorities during her current term.

  • “We should expect her next five years in office to be dedicated to this area. As EU ambassadors in the region, we have been tasked with doing everything we can to accelerate the process,” said Soreca, who also serves as the EU Special Representative, in an interview with today’s Zagreb-based Večernji List, BiH edition.

He expressed hope that the upcoming coalition leaders’ meeting, set to take place next week in Mostar, will result in solutions.

  • “It is clear that this is important for the citizens of BiH. The growth plan offers benefits such as access to the single market, digital transition, and green transition—things that can significantly improve the quality of life for BiH citizens well before the country becomes an EU member,” Soreca added.

According to him, the sooner BiH authorities implement EU requirements, the sooner international oversight will become unnecessary.
