Tadić: Dayton supported by people dedicated to peace

Legal expert Ognjen Tadić believes that the Dayton Peace Agreement is supported by intelligent and peace-oriented individuals, rather than those seeking a pretext for conflict within the document.

Tadić told Srna that the Dayton Agreement is a document that outlives both friends and foes, one that everyone interprets but seemingly no one fully understands, as it maintains peace even while being turned into a pretext for renewed conflict.

He emphasized that this is an international treaty viewed by many as a condition for their tranquility while simultaneously being derided as “walls enclosing a bygone era,” a document that represents the sentiment: “It mustn’t get worse, yet it won’t get better anytime soon—and that’s been the case for 29 years.”

“As long as political extremists call it a straitjacket, while wise, peace- and work-dedicated individuals regard it as the most effective safeguard against political madness, I will continue to support the Dayton Peace Agreement,” Tadić stated.

He noted that hope for something better can only exist when there is readiness for something better.

This Thursday, November 21, marks 29 years since the initial signing of the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its 12 annexes, which ended the war in BiH and established its constitutional and legal order.

The agreement created the state community of BiH, consisting of two entities—Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH—both of which are signatories to all annexes.

The Dayton Agreement was officially signed on December 14, 1995, in the Élysée Palace in Paris.
