Return of deer to Majevica

In the sports and recreational hunting area “Majevica,” 24 deer have been introduced, marking a pioneering effort in reintroducing deer on the territory of Republika Srpska.

Among the released animals are stags, does, and fawns acquired from a nearby breeding facility, all of which have undergone necessary veterinary checks.

A celebration was held today to mark the beginning of this project, which was funded by the budget of the “Majevica” Lopare Hunting Association and donations from its hunters.

Goran Tasovac, president of the “Majevica” Lopare Hunting Association, stated that today they are celebrating the return of the European deer, which inhabited Majevica in the 1970s but disappeared due to the effects of war.

He emphasized that hunters aim to enrich Majevica with deer and expect some reproduction as early as May.

“We have prepared everything to monitor their movements at all times,” said Tasovac.

Živojin Lazić, Secretary General of the Hunting Association of Republika Srpska, described this pioneering release as a beneficial and positive initiative, expressing gratitude to all institutions involved and promising full support to the Majevica Hunting Association.

The event was also attended by the Minister of Energy and Mining of Republika Srpska, Petar Đokić, who highlighted hunters’ dedication to environmental improvement.

He noted that the presence of deer on Majevica is being restored after 30 years and expressed his pleasure in attending such a significant event.

The Mayor of Lopare, Rado Savić, told reporters that the large turnout today shows the deep affection that the people of Majevica have for nature.

The reintroduction of deer to Majevica was initiated by the “Majevica” Lopare Hunting Association and is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management of Republika Srpska, the Hunting Association, and the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural, Historical, and Natural Heritage.
