Semberija cabbage is one of four products registered in the Register of Geographical Indications.
This quality guarantee is expected to help with the marketing of cabbage produced in Semberija and to achieve better selling prices, especially in foreign markets.
The registration defines that the name “Semberija cabbage” applies to the “Bijeljina cabbage” variety and hybrids with similar genetics, characteristics, mineral content, and organic matter, in accordance with the product specification.
In Semberija, cabbage is cultivated on nearly 1,000 hectares. There is a decades-long tradition, with excellent natural conditions, primarily an abundance of easily accessible water for irrigation. However, climate changes now require more knowledge and greater investment.
The majority of cabbage produced in Semberija is sold at markets, but a large portion is processed or sold as sauerkraut. Processors adhere to traditional recipes without additives, making it easy to market abroad.
Farmers believe that the geographical protection will improve their market position and enhance sales and production, which has been declining recently.
The initiative was launched by farmers from Bijeljina, organized into several associations, and the protection of the geographical origin of Semberija cabbage has been supported by relevant institutions.
