The Association of Writers of Republika Srpska announced today that the “Kočić Award” for 2024 has been awarded to the poet Matija Bećković.
The jury, consisting of Ranko Risojević, Predrag Bjelošević, and Duško Pevulja, unanimously decided to award Bećković, describing him as the “undoubtedly leading contemporary Serbian poet,” as stated in the announcement.
Noting that Bećković has been celebrated, praised, and frequently awarded throughout his long poetic career, the jury added that “it is all the more surprising that he has not yet been awarded the ‘Kočić Award.'”
- “He certainly deserves it, as the high achievements of his work have made him, like Kočić, a true people’s writer, whose words have long entered the proverbial lexicon of the language and people to which he belongs,” the jury stated in their reasoning.
