The Minister of Energy and Mining of Republika Srpska, Petar Đokić, believes that it would be most prudent for the Bosniaks and their sponsors, who initiated the discussion on the Srebrenica resolution in the UN General Assembly, to withdraw the contentious document. He argues that doing so would contribute to stability and the overall improvement of relations in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
Đokić emphasized that, following the diplomatic efforts of Republika Srpska and Serbia, the majority of countries around the world today certainly think differently about this issue than they did when the resolution was first introduced.
He reiterated that the Bosniaks supporting the resolution should withdraw it because this would contribute to the normalization of life in BiH.
“We have seen that the rhetoric surrounding this resolution has led to a general state of unrest and fear that a war conflict could occur here. I think the reasonable part of the world should understand this. Those who don’t want to understand can remain in the minority,” said Đokić.
He considers the constant postponements of the vote on the controversial resolution a positive signal regarding relations in this very sensitive moment in which it is being attempted to be imposed.
“It is a malicious and deceitful intent to include in the resolution a qualification that a people are genocidal, attributing collective responsibility for war crimes in the Srebrenica area to the people and leadership of Republika Srpska,” Đokić emphasized.
He stated that the idea of adopting this resolution originated in the Sarajevo political scene, and it is no coincidence that Zlatko Lagumdžija went to the UN as Bosnia’s ambassador, where he lobbied in certain circles to impose the stigma of genocide on Republika Srpska and the Serb people.
“Neither is the Serb people genocidal, nor can a people who have suffered the most horrific tragedies in history in less than 100 years be considered genocidal. How can such a people be genocidal? It is impossible,” Đokić stressed.
The session of the UN General Assembly where the proposed Srebrenica resolution is to be considered is scheduled for Thursday, May 23, as announced on the UN General Assembly’s website.
