Vranješ: elections in Hungary are important for Republika Srpska as well

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is a strong pillar for the Serb community in the Balkans, while his political opponent Péter Magyar would not be, assessed Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Ambassador to Serbia, Aleksandar Vranješ.

Vranješ emphasized that the issues to be decided in the upcoming elections in Hungary are important both for Europe and for Serbs.

If Magyar were to win, Vranješ stated that, according to current indicators, there would be a major shift and abandonment of Hungary’s existing sovereignist positions within the EU.

  • All the negative EU policies—from its approach to illegal migrants, financing of the war in Ukraine, to the energy crisis—which Viktor Orbán has successfully opposed, would ultimately reach Hungary as well – Vranješ told the portals Fakti and Sve o Srpskoj.

He explained that such a newly de-sovereignized Hungary would accept what he described as a harmful and aggressive pro-German policy from Brussels, embodied in the actions of Ursula von der Leyen, which would also be reflected in relations with Republika Srpska and Serbia.

  • It can therefore be said that these elections are important for Republika Srpska as well, because a potential anti-Orbán government in Budapest would certainly not maintain the positions and projects that Orbán has successfully built with the authorities in Banja Luka, and Republika Srpska would lose an important ally – Vranješ said.

According to him, the most Republika Srpska can do in support of Prime Minister Orbán’s campaign is to call on all Serbs and Hungarian voters who value good Serb–Hungarian relations to go out and vote for Orbán, which Milorad Dodik has already done.

He added that he is not aware of any Bosniak politician publicly supporting Magyar and his Tisza party in the upcoming elections, but noted that it is clear that political Sarajevo opposes Orbán due to his friendship with Dodik and his open support for Republika Srpska.

Although Orbán has done nothing to the detriment of the Bosniak people or Bosnia and Herzegovina, Vranješ assessed that his “fault” is his friendship with Dodik and his political and economic support for Republika Srpska.
