Matica srpska in Novi Sad was today ceremonially presented with the Ilovica copy of Saint Sava’s Nomocanon (Zakonopravilo) from 1262, in an event organized by the Conference of Serbian National Organizations from countries across the region.
Serbia’s minister without portfolio in charge of the diaspora, Đorđe Milićević, who attended the ceremony, emphasized that this is the first constitutional-legal document from the late 13th century and that its value is immeasurable.
The document was handed over to Matica srpska by representatives of umbrella organizations of the Serbian people from the region, the Government of Serbia announced.
Addressing those present, Milićević congratulated two major jubilees on behalf of the Government of Serbia—850 years since the birth of Saint Sava and two centuries since the founding of the oldest Serbian cultural institution.
He stressed the importance of preserving historical, cultural, and spiritual heritage, noting that future generations must understand the foundations on which the modern Serbian state was built.
Milićević added that a nation’s identity is not preserved through conflict, but through tradition, culture, and spirituality, underlining the enduring messages of Saint Sava—peace, dialogue, and mutual understanding.
He also pointed to the importance of maintaining peace and safeguarding stability and independence, which, he said, are being challenged for the Serbian people.
