The Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željka Cvijanović, stated at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas that Republika Srpska feels significantly freer to speak about its position due to the new US administration led by Donald Trump.
At the beginning of her address, Cvijanović thanked the organizers for the invitation, noting that it was an honor to be among people who share similar values.
Speaking about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, she said that Republika Srpska now feels more relaxed in addressing issues that were previously difficult to discuss.
“We feel more comfortable talking about issues we could not speak about before, and this has been the case since the arrival of Donald Trump’s administration in the United States. We are very pleased about this in Republika Srpska. The story of Bosnia and Herzegovina is very complex—it was established by the Dayton Peace Agreement. Bosnia and Herzegovina is the last colony in Europe,” Cvijanović stated.
She added that Bosnia and Herzegovina currently has a so-called High Representative, Christian Schmidt, who, she claims, was never confirmed by the Dayton framework, yet imposes laws and decisions.
“There can be no talk of democracy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, because there is an unelected foreign official imposing laws and removing a democratically elected president of Republika Srpska. We now feel freer to speak about this in the United States. The American approach toward Republika Srpska, as part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has changed significantly in recent times, as the US now has a more realistic approach to the Balkans,” she noted.
Cvijanović emphasized that she understands concerns among European counterparts but argued that Europe lacks a clear strategy and plan, which she highlighted as a key difference between the US and the European Union.
She was introduced by Richard Grenell, who, after her speech, stated that they would remain engaged and informed about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In addition to Cvijanović, speakers at the conference included Linda McMahon, Scott Turner, Tom Homan, Matthew Schlapp, George Simion, Liz Truss, and Mateusz Morawiecki, along with numerous members of Congress and other prominent figures in American political and public life.
The Conservative Political Action Conference is one of the most influential gatherings of conservative and sovereignist political actors from the United States and around the world.
