Ković: Aggression against Republika Srpska and FR Yugoslavia shattered the international order

BELGRADE – Exactly 27 years ago, the NATO aggression against Serbia, then the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, began. From a historical perspective, that attack represented the destruction of the international order, said historian Miloš Ković.

Ković argues that NATO aggression effectively began with air strikes against Republika Srpska in 1994 and 1995, and continued in 1999 against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

“They destroyed Christian places of worship and handed them over to those who do not believe in that faith. This was Europe confronting itself—its own self-destruction. The current demographic and cultural crisis in the European Union is a consequence of that attack on the Serb people, the destruction of their religious sites, and the unpunished devastation of an entire nation,” Ković stated.

He emphasized that this represented the third major suffering of the Serb people in the 20th century and the taking of a Serbian state under the pretext of a humanitarian crisis.

“The crime committed against the Serb people was covered under the label of humanitarian intervention. At the time, they said ‘never again Srebrenica,’ and we became very familiar with that rhetoric. Today, as we see, the whole world is becoming familiar with it,” Ković added.

According to him, the global context has since changed significantly.

“We no longer live in the 1990s. We now live in a multipolar world. Developments favor nations willing to fight for freedom and defend what is theirs, and the Serb people showed in 1991, 1992, and 1999 that they are one such nation,” Ković said.

He stressed that the Serb people should remain rational and preserve their spiritual and national values.

“It is not for us to change the world—that should be left to powers like Russia or China. Our task is to survive under very difficult conditions. We have slowly learned how to play that game, which is particularly evident in the policies of Republika Srpska—preserving identity, protecting our children, and steadily pursuing our interests,” Ković noted.

He concluded that the ultimate goal is the spiritual—and even biological—survival of the Serb people.

“Never again—that should be our guiding principle,” Ković said.

The Day of Remembrance for victims of the 1999 NATO aggression will be marked this evening in Vranje at the monument dedicated to the victims, located at the plateau of the National Museum Gallery.
