Day of mourning in Republika Srpska marks 34 years since the start of the tragic conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina

A Day of Mourning is being observed in Republika Srpska to mark 34 years since the beginning of the tragic conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The decision was adopted by the Government of Republika Srpska at the initiative of the competent ministry and the Veterans’ Organization of Srpska.

In parts of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina with a Bosniak majority, March 1 is marked as the so-called Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as on that date 34 years ago an illegal referendum on independence and secession from the SFRY was held.

For Serbs in Republika Srpska, March 1 is remembered for the murder of the Serb wedding guest Nikola Gardović in Sarajevo, an event that served as the trigger for the outbreak of the war.
