Palace of the Republic illuminated in remembrance of Holocaust victims – “We Remember”

On the Palace of the Republic in Banja Luka this evening, on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, a number symbolizing 6,000,000 Jews murdered in the Holocaust was displayed.

Beneath the number was the message “We Remember,” marking participation in a global remembrance campaign launched several years ago by the World Jewish Congress, with the aim of paying tribute to the victims and ensuring that such suffering of a people is never repeated.

The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust was established on November 1, 2005, by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly.

This day is particularly commemorated in European countries where 53 million people lost their lives during the Second World War, including nearly 31 million civilians.

According to data from the Donja Gradina Memorial Area, 700,000 victims perished in the notorious Jasenovac camp during the Second World War as a result of Ustaša crimes, including 500,000 Serbs, 40,000 Roma, 33,000 Jews, and 127,000 anti-fascists. 20,000 children were killed at Jasenovac.
