German AfD welcomes lifting of sanctions against Dodik

Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has welcomed the decision of the U.S. administration to lift sanctions against President Milorad Dodik, calling on the European Union to “reconsider its position toward the Republic of Srpska.”

In a statement by the party, Bundestag member and Committee on European Affairs representative Tobias Teich said that the removal of sanctions against Dodik represents a long-overdue correction of earlier mistakes.

“It shows that pressure and interference are not the foundation of stability in the Western Balkans. Political disagreements must not be resolved through sanctions. Foreign policy should be based on dialogue and respect, not punitive measures,” Teich stated.

He emphasized that anyone who wants stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina must respect the constitutional competencies of all three constituent peoples.

According to Teich, the U.S. decision should serve as a signal to the European Union to reassess its approach toward Republika Srpska.

“Instead of continuing with the failed protectorate model, the EU should finally respect the Dayton Constitution and engage in negotiations with Banja Luka on an equal footing,” he said.

The AfD parliamentary group, he concluded, explicitly welcomes this step:

“It marks the return of political reason and diplomatic wisdom in relations with smaller nations. The citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina deserve self-determination — not guardianship,” Teich declared.
