The decision of Serb political representatives in Bosnia and Herzegovina to establish the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH in 1991 demonstrated strong national awareness and responsibility in ensuring the survival of Serbs in this region, said Drago Mastilović, Director of the Institute of Historical Sciences at the University of East Sarajevo.
He emphasized that the decision of Serb members of the then Assembly of SR BiH, on October 24, 1991, represents one of the most important dates in the modern history of Serbs west of the Drina River.
“This act showed not only the strong self-awareness and national responsibility of Serb political representatives in BiH, but also their determination — and personal courage — to use all democratic mechanisms to create an institutional framework that would guarantee the survival of the Serb people in this area,” Mastilović told SRNA.
According to him, this is why we can rightfully say today that the establishment of the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH was a historic step in the struggle for the survival of Serbs, who were clearly facing a similar fate to that experienced by Serbs in Croatia.
“This first step toward building the institutions of the future Republika Srpska demonstrated significant democratic capacity and the strength of state-building aspirations among the Serb people west of the Drina,” Mastilović concluded.
