Nenad Stevandić, President of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, spoke during an appearance on the show Telering about the upcoming referendum in Republika Srpska, stressing that it is important for both the government and the opposition to hear the voice of the people.
“Whatever Milorad Dodik does as the holder of his mandate, I think what truly matters is what the people think. The opposition has found itself in an uncomfortable position, being perceived as the saviors of BiH,” Stevandić said.
He pointed out that the opposition has, in effect, positioned itself as the defender of Christian Schmidt, without fully realizing it.
“We have an alternative. Let’s go before the people. Let’s not allow some courts to measure us. Let’s go to the people and see whether they accept it. Let our colleagues in the opposition understand how the people see them,” Stevandić emphasized.
He argued that the opposition’s actions have given legitimacy to politicians from Sarajevo.
Commenting on the recent attack on Branislav Borenović of the PDP, Stevandić recalled that he personally experienced a similar attack while in the opposition.
“We’ve all had unpleasant situations in this city. Someone targeted my house when I was in the opposition. I spoke with Borenović the evening of the attack. It’s unbelievable to me that someone would do such a thing. I told him that if he needed help, we are here, and I didn’t make that public. I believe such an attack is unacceptable. I sincerely hope it is not connected to politics,” said Stevandić.
He added that only the people—not thugs—should decide the fate of politicians.
“I hope those who attacked Borenović will be arrested. People must not be endangered,” Stevandić concluded.
