At the Srebrenica Cultural Center, the documentary film “Goran Zekić – The First of Us” by war journalist Ljubiša Milutinović had its premiere. The film tells the story of the life and death of pre-war Srebrenica judge and member of parliament Goran Zekić.
Zekić was a judge and lawyer in Srebrenica, later a member of parliament in the multi-party Assembly of BiH, and subsequently in the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH.
His son, Nemanja, emphasized that according to many testimonies, his father left an indelible mark in the region.
“The idea of making a film about my father is a great honor for me, but also a signpost that we must continue to prove the extent of Serb suffering in the Srebrenica municipality. My father was killed on May 8, 1992, in an ambush on the way to Zalažje, and that murder is still recorded as an unsolved case. Even 33 years later, we do not know who killed Goran Zekić, but with this film, we now have a path forward in how to work and collect documentation about the suffering of Serbs in Srebrenica,” said Nemanja Zekić.
Author Ljubiša Milutinović, a witness of the 1990s war in the region, stated that the story of Goran had to be told.
“It is important to preserve the culture of remembrance, and this film sheds light on a great man who stood at the head of the Serb people. In the coming period, my idea is to make documentary films about Boško Crveni and priest Boban Zarić,” Milutinović added.
Goran Zekić was killed on May 8, 1992, in an ambush on the Srebrenica–Zalažje road. His death marked the beginning of the exodus of Serbs from Srebrenica.
