Szijjártó: We respect the will of the people who democratically elect their representatives

“We respect the peoples who have chosen their leaders through democratic elections, and we support those elected leaders. This is also the case with the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik,” said Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, at a press conference.

“However, we must understand that sovereign policy can only be carried out if it is free from all external influence and attempts at interference, and the legitimacy of such policy—meaning the legitimacy of people who were democratically elected—must be respected,” Szijjártó emphasized.

He added that foreign influence applied in the Western Balkans over the years has always led to destabilization. “From our perspective, the people and countries of the Western Balkans have the right to choose their own leaders and shape their own policies. It is unacceptable to belittle democratically elected leaders—the leaders of the people,” Szijjártó concluded.
